1939 New York Worlds Fair Icons Vintage Tablecloth Another from my collection of 1939 World's Fair tablecloths. This one is a New York souvenir tablecloth with wonderful icons of the worlds fair and New York. It has a Statue of Liberty superimposed over the Trylon and Perisphere from the fair. Written underneath one of the corner pictures is (c) NYWF. It is printed on the novelty damask of the time period. The colors are the blue and orange of the fair. This is one of those collectible tablecloths, not really a using tablecloth. The dyes from this time period were not all stable so I'm not trying to wash any of these tablecloths further. This cloth has extensive storage staining plus a few small holes/worn spots. The staining is deeper in person than it looks in the pictures. At the tablecloth convention last fall, we had a presentation and discussion with Mary Beth Temple who is the author of a book on textile conservation. Her take was to decide whether a textile is usable or an artifact. A useable textile could be restored and used. A historical artifact should be preserved. These 1939 WF textiles often have unstable dyes. I chose to leave them alone rather than risk ruining them with modern cleaning products. Size: 52 X 51 Fabric Content: Novelty weave cotton Dye Condition: Good Holes/Tears: Maybe 5 small holes Stains: Fairly extensive storage staining Hems/Selvedges: Good | |
